Charles Kingsley (July 12 1819 – January 23 1875) was an English novelist, particularly associated with a West Country.
He was natural within Devon, the boy of the vicar. His brother, Henry Kingsley, also became the novelist. Charles spent his childhood around Clovelly, Devon and was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, before himself going within for the church. From either 1844, he was rector of Eversley in Hampshire, and within 1860, he was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge. His interest inside history spilled on top into his writings, which include A Heroes (1856), a toddlers's book all about Greek mythology, and many historical novels, of which a better known come Hypatia (1853), Hereward the Wake (1865), and Westward Ho! (1855). Kingsley's concern for social reform is illustrated within his neat classic, The Water-Babies (1863), a sort of fairytale just about a son chimney-chimneysweeper, which retained its popularity swell into the 20th century. Moreover in The A body of water Children he develops in that literary form something as a purgatory, which is very intersting for soul world health organization understood himself as a like "Anti-Roman" theologizer.
Kingsley too wrote poetry & political articles, too when many volumes of sermons. His argument, within print, by owning John Henry Newman is said to have prompted a latter to create his Apologia Pro Vita Sua. Kingsley himself wwhen influenced — as far in and of itself an independent mind may be influenced — by Frederick Denison Maurice. He was inside close email to several Victorian thinkers & writers, e.g. to George MacDonald. Kingsley died around 1875, the widely respected figure.
As a novelist his primary power store his descriptive faculties. A descriptions of South American scenery in Westward Ho!, of the Egyptian desert in Hypatia, of the North Devon scenery around Both Years Ago, come among a virtually all brilliant pieces of wordpainting withinside English prose-writing; & a Our contries scenery is potentially further vixenish & further truthfully described after he got seen it simply per eye of his imagination than in his work AtSurvive, which was written fallowing he experienced visited a tropics. His sympathy for tikes taught him training assure their interests. His version of the old Greek stories entitled A Heroes, & A lake-toddlers & Madam How else & Lady How come, where he deals by using popular natural history, require high rank among books for toddlers.
Personally Charles Kingsley was tall & spare, tendinous like than mighty, & of the restless irritable temperament. His complexion was dusky, his hair dark, & his eye brightly & piercing. His temper was hot, saved under rigid control; his disposition caring, gentle & caring, by using flashing scorn & outrage against 100% that was ungentle & impure; he was a good married man, father & friend. One of his girl, Mary St Leger Kingsley (Mrs Harrison), became swell called a novelist under the nom de guerre of "Lucas Malet."
Kingsley's life was written by his widow woman around 1877, entitled Charles Kingsley, his Letters & Memories of his Life, & presents the super poignant & beautiful picture of her married man, however peradventure hardly does justice to his humour, his wit, his overflowing vitality & schoolboyish fun.
But then:
Kingsley was guided per Black Legend in his popular historical romance of 1855, Westward Ho!: the hero grows up in the reign of Elizabeth I to become a West Country buccaneer and takes on and defeats the Spanish at sea and on land. Throughout this piece of fiction, a Spanish characters come drawn when vain, chesty & cruel; a Irish as well receive hostile professional assistance. Interestingly, several articles around the early-20th century Lexicon of National Biography (heavy drawn upon by academician historiographer in Britain & America) cite Westward Ho! as a factual source once treating by owning Elizabethan numbers.
John Henry Newman's Apologia Pro Vita Sua shows the distress that Kingsley's vitriol can cause.
Kingsley's humour has escaped numbers of; maybe it may be detected in another of his historical romances, known as fallowing its heroine, Hypatia, in which a arc neo-Platonist of end-of-empire Alexandria converts to Christianity at the moment of her obscene slaying.
